The past year in American politics make the
differences clear between conservatives and liberals in regard to
national security. During this time frame, through unforgiving
media leaks, we have learned how our government has been protecting us:
by tracking overseas phone calls of potential terrorists, tough
interrogations in undisclosed locations for high level terrorist
operates, and by tracking financial transactions around the
globe. When conservatives learned about these tactics, the
first question we asked was what do these disclosures mean to our
national security? This is especially true in the case of the
SWIFT program. Since this program is, admittedly even by the New
York Times, a completely legal program, one might expect supporters of
the current administration to brag about this proven successful
program. Instead, the administration and conservatives alike were
more concerned about the ramifications the disclosure had on our
national security.
On the other side, liberals seem to be disappointed, and cry foul,
every time news of these programs that protect us surface. They
get angry at the existence of these programs, but at the same time
approve of the act of leaking these classified programs.
Conservatives are happy that these programs exist, but at the same time
disapprove of leaking harmful information. These differences
couldn't be more clear.
