If the U.N. wishes to save any of the minimal credibility it has left,
it should implement its own security council's resolution 1559.
This November 2004 resolution acknowledges the sovereignty of the state of Lebanon
against any international influences, and demands the disarmament of any
Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias (Palestinians and Hezbollah).
Although, this already agreed upon resolution would have prevented the
current crisis in the Middle East if it was implemented, taking it
seriously now by enforcing the resolution would be a step in the right direction to help bring the
crisis to an end.
One needs to remember that it would be
impossible for the Lebanese military to rid its country of Hezbollah
and armed Palestinians alone, that is if it wanted to. So unless the world community wants
Israel to clear Lebanon of these forces by themselves, which they ultimately will,
the UN should implement the disarmament with their forces, which again
is what their own resolution calls for. Letting Israel do the
UN's work for them can only heighten tension in the region.
The world community needs to realize that it is in everyone's best
interest to make sure terrorist organizations are not able to hold
countries hostage. The world community also needs to realize that
the only way to accomplish this is by force. It would be
pointless to have talks with organizations whose mission statements are
not based on more tangible things such as obtaining human rights, or
obtaining land, but rather based on the hate and the destruction
of
Israel. At Camp David, the Israli government bent over backwards
to appease the Palestinians, but nothing was good enough because the
appeasement did not include the end to the Israeli state. In
2000, the government fully withdrew all forces from Lebanon, but that
wasn't good enough for Hezbollah because it did withdrawing from
Lebanon did not cause the destruction of the Isreali people. No,
nothing will ever be good enough for extreme terrorist groups, such as
Hamas and Hezbollah, and history has proved this time and time
again.
